The University of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin. Situated on an urban campus spanning 299 acres, Penn utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. CSERI is offering some great post-doctoral fellowships for one year in the social sciences. Even better, you can renew it for a second year if things are going well.

As a fellow, you’ll help with assisting in workshops for faculty and graduate students. You’ll also pitch in to review research from students who scored grants. Also, fellows will team up with affiliated professors on collaborative projects.

The main thing though is your own research and getting plugged into Penn’s academic scene. No official teaching duties either, which is nice. But you are expected to be on campus to fully take part in everything. The goal is to give dedicated time and resources to advance their own work, while also contributing to CSERI through events. You will be wanted around to network and get involved in all things CSERI-related on campus. It’s a win-win for both early career researchers and the center.

Eligibility and Requirements for University of Pennsylvania CSERI Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Social Sciences

CSERI invites applications from scholars who have earned a PhD or equivalent degree in the social sciences within the past two years. Experience with statistical analysis, qualitative research software, GIS, experimental methods, and other approaches is desirable but not required. Applications from women, underrepresented groups and minorities are encouraged.

Required Application Documents should be uploaded and include:

  • Cover Letter
  • Proposal (max 1500 words) describing proposed research project
  • CV – Outline experience with qualitative and quantitative methods. List skills with software like R, STATA, ATLAS/TI, Dedoose. Also include fellowships, funding, scholarships and publications.
  • Writing Sample (max 25 pages) – Either a published article, book chapter or thesis excerpt
  • Two Confidential Letters of Recommendation – Commenting on the proposed project and applicant’s qualifications/experience as a researcher.

Financial Benefits

The annual stipend allocated to the chosen scholar is $53,000. On top of this generous salary, the fellowship also covers pertinent institutional fees and provides for individual health insurance coverage.

In addition to the base stipend, the fellow will receive $2,500 specifically dedicated to underwriting the expenses of their research project during the fellowship period. This seed funding is designed to assist fellows with launching their work. Moreover, should the allotted research support not fully meet the needs of the fellow’s study, additional provisions are available to apply for supplementary funding as required.
