This scholarship will help students attend the University of Canterbury to pursue an Honours or Master’s degree in economics or political science. Alan Gibbs made a gift in 1994 to start the scholarship.

About University Of Canterbury

The second university in Aotearoa New Zealand was founded in 1873 and was called as Canterbury College.

With one significant exception, it was designed after the Oxbridge model and allowed women students right away.

Helen Connon, a recent graduate, was the first female recipient of honors in the former British Empire.

The College, which was housed in elegant stone structures on a major city block, was reliant on the rents from high country farms with which the Canterbury Provincial Council had endowed it.

Ernest Rutherford, the most esteemed graduate of Canterbury.

  • The successful applicants of the University of Canterbury – F A Hayek Scholarships in Economics or Political Science in New Zealand, 2019 will receive an award of $16,500.

Requirements for University of Canterbury Masters Scholarship Qualification

  • The scholarship shall be awarded from time to time to a student in Economics or Political Science.
  • The tenure shall be one year for a Master’s student and up to three years for a student enrolled in a Master’s or Honours degree. 
  • The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising:
    • the Vice-Chancellor, or nominee;  
    • the Dean of the Faculty of Science
    • the Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Must be enrolled in a programme for a Master’s or Honours degree in Economics or Political Science at the University of Canterbury, with a course weighting in the range of 0.75-1.50 EFTS.

Such a programme must include a research component of at least 30 points
