This scholarship honours Frank Ferguson, an engineer and innovator who devoted fifty years of his life to advancing development in Zambia by spearheading a number of top-notch infrastructure initiatives. It also honours his memory.

Frank Ferguson Fellows ought to be equipped with the capacity to significantly advance Zambia’s development.

Benefits of Frank Ferguson Fellowship in Engineering

The scholarship award pays for course fees, necessary travel and lodging costs, as well as monthly stipends, insurance, and other incidentals.

In Ireland, qualifying master’s programs begin in August or September of each year, and depending on the program, scholarships last between 10 and 16 months.

Requirements for Frank Ferguson Fellowship in Engineering Qualification

To be eligible for the Frank Ferguson Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of Zambia and be residing in Zambia.
  • Hold a Degree in Engineering or related discipline with Merit or higher from an accredited and government-recognised higher education institution,
  • have achieved the necessary academic standard to be accepted onto a Master’s level course of study in Engineering
  • Not already hold a qualification at master’s level or higher
  • Be applying to commence a new course at the master’s level in Ireland no sooner than August/September 2020.
  • Have identified and selected two relevant courses from the above list of engineering courses at NUI Galway.
  • Have a clear understanding of the academic and English language proficiencies required for both courses chosen.
  • Must not have applied for an Ireland Fellowship on more than one previous occasion.
  • Be a member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia.
  • Have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
  • Be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of Zambia.
  • Meet any relevant procedural requirements of the Government of Zambia.

Applications must include a study proposal on a topic related to a social issue in Zambia.

All candidates invited to present their research proposal to the Irish Embassy will be further screened after being shortlisted by the Engineering Institution of Zambia.

How to Apply

Please read the Applicants Guidance Note carefully before completing it as eligibility criteria may differ from country to country. 

The application process consists of three stages:

  • Stage 1   Preliminary Application;
  • Stage 2   Detailed Application (including research proposal);
  • Stage 3   Interviews.

All applicants who are selected to go forward to the second stage will be required to sit an IELTS exam unless they are already in possession of an IELTS certificate that is dated 2018 or later at the time of application which shows the applicant has achieved the necessary score for the course they intend to apply to. Early preparation for the IELTS exam is strongly advised, even for native English speakers.

Please include “Frank Ferguson Fellowship” in the subject line of all emails, and on the envelope of any postage sent to the Embassy.
